I know firsthand what it's like to struggle as a learner. Retained in first grade and not fully learning to read until fourth grade, I spent much of my early education working harder than it seemed everyone else had to. Every success required determination, resilience, and perseverance. Those early struggles didn't define my future—they shaped my purpose and ignited a lifelong passion for helping others discover their own potential.
Learning is universal. It isn't limited to students or reserved for a select few. Every person brings unique experiences, strengths, challenges, and opportunities to grow. For nearly four decades, I have served education as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, district leader, instructional coach, leadership coach, and educational consultant. Throughout every role, my mission has remained the same: to help others become the very best version of themselves.
Along the way, I discovered one of the most powerful ways to improve schools is to intentionally become a learner again.
Most educators spend their careers designing learning experiences for others. Far fewer intentionally place themselves back into the role of learner—stepping into situations where they are no longer the expert, where mistakes are inevitable, progress is uncertain, and growth requires humility and persistence.
As I intentionally pursued challenging new learning experiences, I gained a perspective that transformed how I think about teaching, leadership, and school culture. Those experiences became the foundation of The Learner's Perspective™—a mindset that helps educators make better decisions by seeing learning through the experiences of the learner.
Today, I share that perspective with educators across the country, helping teachers and leaders create classrooms, schools, and districts where every learner belongs, grows, and thrives.
