The Learner's Perspective™ is a mindset that helps educators and school leaders see learning through a different lens. It challenges us to look beyond assumptions and consider how our decisions are experienced by the people we serve. When we change our perspective, we change the decisions we make—and those decisions shape relationships, school culture, and learning.

The mindset behind The Learner's Perspective™ didn't begin with a research study or a leadership theory. It grew from Derek's intentional decision to become a learner again. Over the past several years, Derek has pursued unfamiliar skills, stepped into environments where he was a beginner, and embraced the vulnerability, uncertainty, and growth that come with learning—not because he had to, but because he believed the best way to understand learners was to become one himself.

Those experiences didn't simply teach him new skills. They transformed the way he thinks about teaching, learning, and leadership. Sitting in the learner's seat revealed that many of the decisions educators make every day look very different when experienced from the learner's point of view.

Today, Derek shares those lessons through keynote speaking, professional learning experiences, and leadership thought partnering, helping educators and school leaders examine their own decisions through The Learner's Perspective™. His goal isn't to ask others to repeat his journey—it's to help them see their schools differently because of what that journey revealed.
